Refugio, Jose, and Gisela suffered the tragic loss of their mother, Laura, their 9-year-old brother, Marco, and their 15-year-old sister, Miranda, in the tornado that struck Valley View, Texas, in May 2024. Refugio and Jose also lost their home, while Gisela's home, located five minutes away, remained intact. Despite the survival of their physical possessions, the family faces the immeasurable loss of three loved ones, leaving them struggling to find a way forward. Refugio and Jose, who were severely injured in the tornado, have no home or vehicles. Although their physical health is improving, the financial impact is overwhelming. Gisela does what she can to help, but she and her husband manage on a single income, as she stays home to care for their special needs daughter, who has cerebral palsy and other medical conditions.
