Mason was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the age of 2. From the beginning, we faced challenges like delayed walking (at 22 months) and speech regressions, which left us uncertain about his future. Now 5 years old, Mason is a joyful, happy child, though he still has significant and unique needs. As a non-verbal child, Mason is learning to communicate through a tablet, but this method is both difficult and unappealing for him. He doesn’t yet understand simple words like “mom,” “dad,” or even his own name, which creates serious safety concerns, especially given his love for running and his inability to recognize potential dangers. A critical need for Mason is a specialized bed that ensures his safety while he sleeps. Quality sleep is essential for all children, but it’s especially important for Mason, as ASD can make the world feel overwhelming and intense. This bed would provide an enclosed, secure environment, helping him avoid accidents and allowing him to self-regulate through stimming at night. Despite persistent efforts from Mason’s doctors, therapists, and numerous appeals to our insurance, we’ve been denied coverage for this essential bed four times. This specialized sleeping solution would not only prevent Mason from getting trapped between the mattress and the wall, but it would also improve his sleep quality and overall well-being.
